App of the Week for October 29:
GarageBand

Price: $4.99
Garageband is such a versatile app! You can give students the chance to practice oral language skills, improve reading fluency, enhance the mood of their stories with original musical scores, and create educational podcasts for others. You can even import their audio broadcasts into iMovie, iTunes or save it at SoundCloud, so sharing is easy. For a video tutorial, see our Garageband page.
Some Classroom Ideas:
GarageBand does have a cost of $4.99, but it is worth it! If you buy 20 copies or more the price drops to half price.
However you decide to use Garageband, we would love to hear about and see your examples! Email [email protected] with your ideas and let us know how we can help.

Some Classroom Ideas:
- In English Language Arts, after studying fables or popular myths, students select one of the stories studied. The students write their own story with the theme or message of the original tale. The students then record their work and add a sound track to enhance the imagery. A "listening library" of the students' works is compiled to be shared on the class website with parents and the community!
- In Math, young students create and record a counting song. Or, they create and record an original rhyme or song for the entire family of math facts. Older student research a mathematical issue, for example labor market trends in the community, and create a radio broadcast.
- In Science, students support their Science Fair Project with a recorded report explaining the scientific process involved and their findings. Or, after studying our water systems, students create a public service announcement encouraging pollution prevention and control.
- In Social Studies, after studying other cultures, students create descriptive sentences, sound effects, and music to vividly describe an assigned culture. (If that idea seems too tame for you, check out Rock Our World for inspiration!)
