App of the Week for January 7th:
Voice Thread
Price: Free
Voicethread is an iOS and web 2.0 tool that allows for unique online collaboration. The main idea is that anyone can create a presentation using images or videos like a powerpoint or keynote presentation but the feature that sets it apart is the ability to record a voice over and annotate over any video or image. Another great feature is that it allows anyone with an account to place their comments on the presentation using text, voice, or video. The comments allow for real time collaboration and interaction with the presentation. There are also many presentations that are also put on the voicethread.com that can be viewed and used, as long as the presentation is public.
Benefits:
· Can embed or link any presentation
· Presenter can annotate over images and videos
· Presenter can record voice or video on top of any presentation
· Students can have real time interaction with peers
· Students can answer/comment via text, video, voice
· Can create presentations on iPad or on PC
· Can view presentations on any iOS device (app) or any device with flash player
Drawbacks:
· Class set/whole site accounts can get pricey
Voicethread.com offers different pricing schemes based on your needs or you site’s needs. It can get a little pricey depending on the number of students that you have but the initial account is free and students can sign up on their own. The class set allows for a little more control but the same effect can be achieved with a little time and patience in the initial set up of each class.
