App of the Week for August 6th: Pic Frame
As year-round schools are getting back into the swing of things and the rest of us are gearing up for another fun tech-packed year, this is generally the time that school sites start planning their app purchasing. Hopefully, you have enough devices to take advantage of the Apple Volume Purchasing Program, but even then you might be looking for some ways to shave a few bucks off your final bill. Consider using this fabulous app, Pic Frame, as a viable (and cheaper) alternative to Comic Life.
Pic frame costs .99 and functions as a photo collage app that allows the user to compile anywhere from 1-4 photos from their camera roll using a variety of adjustable templates. You can add information, captions, titles, and more using the "label" function which offers a variety of font choices as well as adjustable text size, color, and backgrounds. There are a TON of classroom uses for an easy to use photo collage app like Pic Fame:
- Vocabulary development using images students have captured using the camera app. Create the vocab collage and add labels to define, describe, identify, or explain.
- Send students on a campus scavenger hunt for real life examples of math or science concepts. Have them use the label function to identify and explain.
- In a Social Studies class, have students use the app to make a photo collage of inventions, contributions, or achievements of a specific person or civilization. Use labels to add information as needed.
- In a Language Arts class, have students identify the exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution of a selection, then use photos (either downloaded from Safari or taken using the camera app) to sequence the events. Use labels to add information as needed.
- In elective classes or extracurricular clubs, have students design advertising campaigns for upcoming fundraisers or activities. Let them get creative and reach their audience effectively using the color filters to create an edgy, engaging end product.
