App of the Week: OhNoFractions
Price: Free
OhNoFractions is an engaging and simple app to use with students to compare and explore fractions. It provides a great visual representation of each fraction being compared. Students have an option to take a peek at the visual solution before deciding on their answer or can choose to view the visualization to prove their answers. You can use your finger to tap the boxes on the visual representation to test your solution. You can tap above the fraction to see if it can be reduced.
The statistics feature allows you to view how many correct and wrong answers, how many times you checked the visual solution, how many times you tried to reduce a fraction.
This app can be used individually, in small group or whole class, even if you only have one iPad. For whole group instruction have students use whiteboard and markers to prove their answers with their own visual representations.
You can use the Reflector App to project the app from your iPad to your laptop then through the LCD projector. Then as the fractions appear have students compare the fraction on their whiteboards and you can display the visualization and check your answers together. Students love this app because it shows the comparison very clearly and easily.
