App of the week for September 3rd: Dropbox
One of the drawbacks of using iPads in the classroom is that they a closed operating system without an easy way to get student work into and off of the iPad. One of the best apps to help a classroom teacher get past some of those limitations is a great free app called Dropbox. First Dropbox on the can be used to share handouts and instructions. When a handout is placed in Dropbox it will generate a url link that can be given to students. Students can then just click on the link you provide and easily download the handout to their iPad. Almost any file can be shared to an iPad using this easy method. In addition Dropbox works across all platforms like Macintosh, Windows, and IOS devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad).
Another of the things that makes Dropbox appealing is that you can use other apps in conjunction with Dropbox. Many apps like Evernote, Goodreader, Notability, Papedesk, allow Dropbox syncing. One of the easiest way to sync work to and from an iPad is using WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning). If your district or school has not set up a Webdav server for you, there is an inexpensive alternative called Dropdav.com. Dropdav.com will allow you to sync Apple native iPad apps like (Numbers, Pages, Keynote) with your Dropbox app. It is an easy way to have students turn in work to your Dropbox. While Dropbox is free, Dropdav does cost 20 dollars a year with the educational discount. If you want to try dropdav.com they have a free two week no credit card trial offer. To me it is one of the easiest ways to get student work off of the iPad and into my hands for evaluation/grading.
