All Recipes
We are always looking for ways to incorporate Problem and Project-based learning into the classroom. Using something that almost all of us will experience and, quite frankly, struggle with at some point is a great way to get the kids involved. Cooking can be fun, frustrating, and challenging all in the same experience. Having students work with recipes and creating a serving size that meets the needs of their family is a great way to incorporate math skills in a problem solving scenario. All Recipes is a site, and iPad app, that comes up with great new recipes and allows the user to manipulate the serving size as needed. Use this to help students work with multiplying, adding, or subtracting fractions.
This is a video tutorial on how to use the All Recipes app in your classroom with your students. This tutorial has been designed for a 6th, 7th, or basic 8th grade math class for the multiplication of fractions. If you have any ideas, please comment at the bottom of the page!

4. Having the students working in groups of 3 to 4, pass the app around to your students and have them do the following:
- Open one of the recipes by pressing on its picture
- Once the recipe opens, have the students press the "Recipe Details" section of the recipe
- The bottom right portion of the screen has ingredients. Have the students write the ingredients down on an index card (or notebook)
- In the recipe details, there should be a "serving size". Have the students write this number down on the index card (or notebook)
- Differentiate accordingly:
- Lower students double the serving size or simply cut it in half
- Middle level students cut it in thirds or triple the recipe
- Higher level students make enough servings for the class size, rewrites, the ingredients for a non-multiple or factor (ex: if the serving size is 5, have the students change the values for a serving size of 3, 4, or 8 just to make it interesting)
- When the groups are completely finished, you can take the index cards and create a class "cookbook" that also serves as a good way to review multiplying fractions!
